This camp is for high school students whom are advanced in mathematics. Employing a “problem-based classroom” teaching approach, the instructor will give the students challenging problems. Students will spend half of the day working through story problems that will involve different math, science, engineering, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will complete the problems in pairs and review them on the boards with their instructors and peers. Students will work as they learn. The other half of the day, students will be taught numerous types of computer programming. Students will be encouraged to actively participate and be hands-on in this camp. Students will be encouraged to ask questions to ensure their understanding of the material. Instructors will teach concepts and ideas as needed by the students. Students who consistently do well in STEM areas and seem to enjoy these classes would be a good fit for this camp. The type of problems will be based on the math common core curriculum and students interests. The course will be administered over five days, Monday through Friday, all day on the campus of Oakland University. Student success will be heavily dependent upon their commitment to excellence while in class.
